What is it with this bias against things like soy bacon or deli or dogs or burgers?

That is a traditional way of eating and I am completely perplexed by the fact that people don’t think vegans and vegetarians should eat soy versions of these foods.

They didn’t create hotdogs because they WERE meat. They created hot dogs OUT OF meat. Now we use soy and stuff and we should just say good bye to all these great food ideas??

I’m totally perplexed by this. Meat doesn’t have a patent on burgers or dogs or anything else. Its a shape.

for me, i don’t eat meat because i find it revolting. i simply don’t like vegan food that tries to imitate the flavour and texture.

I know how you feel, i enjoy fake meat its just as comforting as a bowl of mac and cheese. Some people have a stick up their a ss about these things. It’s not real meat but it’s comforting and tastes good.

I don’t eat it because it’s usually really really processed and the kinds I have tried were really gross. I’m all for home made versions though.

Because these things are made out of meat, without the meat they don’t exist. Its like taking apples out of apple pie and still calling it apple pie, it just doesn’t make sense. A hot dog is made out of meat, period. If you want to make and eat something with a similar shape that’s not made out of meat well then give it a new name. Show a little originality!

Are you talking about the people who think we are hypocritical if we eat them? I don’t know why but for some reason some people can’t wrap their brain around the fact that soy bacon is not really a dead animal and therefore is suitable for a vegetarian. Yes it looks like meat and maybe tastes like meat but it’s NOT meat and this is apparently difficult for some kids to understand.

Vegetarian bacon or hot dogs or burgers or whatever is pretty darn convenient if you ask me and sometimes it tastes good. I just advise newbie vegetarians not to eat them *too much* because they are so expensive and highly processed.

ok so whats your question hunny or is this just a rant about your perplexedness?
i eat fake meats i dont care about it BUT
the reason ppl do is this
1: they are total junk food. like, 90% rda of salt in one fake hotdog. 18grams of fat for quorn fake chicken. etc
2: they are a symbol. its like saying.. why do ppl get mad at fake swastikas? they arnt REALLY swastikas, they are just made to look like one. perhapts in some ignorant persons holloween costume.
    symbols OFFEND.
its like fake fur.. they dont harm animals but they keep the fashion of real fur alive.

Much of that stuff is worse for you than actual meat… I don’t want to think about how many times the soy beans have to be processed to please your appetite that you cannot break just because they are comfort foods you had most of your life. Why call it soy bacon? Its not bacon. I think gross soy brick that was shaped to please weirdos would be a better name. Honestly its hard enough to get people to pay attention to animal rights and nutrition as it is. Those meat substitutes make it look like vegetarians and vegans can’t live without meat to people thinking of trying to change.

Lots of people think that they are really important, and that their opinion is right and everyone who challenges that opinion is wrong and anything they’re not comfortable with, is wrong. Everyone just needs to mind their own business and eat what they like.

on a side note – i really wish I could find a good veggie hotdog since morningstar discontinued theirs.

I get what you mean. It’s probably because people think that vegetarianism is a sacrifice (which it is a little bit) and that they shouldn’t be eating foods that taste like meat that aren’t. But I eat fake meats sometimes because they taste good and they’re suitable for vegetarians and they’re easy to cook. My Dad often gives me fake meats but not always. Like on Monday I was with him (my parents are divorced, you see) I had macaroni cheese, NOT a fake meat. Often on Sundays I’m with him he’ll cook me a fake meat because it’s easy and convenient. If it’s not actual meat, animals don’t die for it and there’s no problem. And you’re right, it’s just a shape. It’s usually made out of meat, but like you said, it can be made from soy, mycoprotein etc. Hope this helps!
